About this book

Language: French

The southern French department of Aveyron is rich in more than 2650 plants that Christian Bernard, a passionate botanist and worthy successor of Father Hippolyte Coste, lists in this book. L'Aveyron en Fleurs lists 2239 spontaneous, subspontaneous or naturalized species, plus a hundred weeds and over a hundred crops visible in the ground cover, and almost 150 wild hybrids. Soil diversity, the range of elevations and exposure to the elements, the range of climatic conditions and mainly agricultural uses of space by man explain the diversity of landscapes, ecosystems, and therefore the exceptional wealth of the flora of Aveyron which covers almost half of the flora of France. Nine hundred photographs, all made by the author, illustrate this work. Christian Bernard designed this inventory as a reference work to offer those interested in the floristic botany of this department (researchers, teachers, planners, naturalists ...) as complete an understanding as possible of the vascular flora (flowering plants, but also ferns and horsetails) and its distribution in the different natural regions. This book, available to the public, should prompt more people to discover the Aveyron flora while inviting specialists to continue the work begun by Christian Bernard and those who accompanied him, and the generations of botanists that preceded them.
