Apart from those who live in the native home of Leucaena in Mexico and Central America and a small number of specialists, few are fully aware of the diversity of species which exists within Leucaena. There are 22 recognised species. They span 40 degrees of latitude and 2500 m in altitude and grow under varied climatic and soil conditions.
