About this book

Language: Portugese

Lichens represent a relevant value of the natural heritage of the island of Porto Santo, in the archipelago of Madeira. More than two hundred species of lichens, some of them endemic, have been identified in this small island territory that has been part of UNESCO's global network of Biosphere Reserves since 2020. Along with an approach to the representativeness and characteristics of the lichen flora of the island of Porto Santo, this book proposes a cultural reading of these organisms, as suggestive references in the visual arts, music and poetry. Photography, perhaps more than words, are, in this work, a way of showing the beauty, diversity and plasticity of the shapes and colours of lichens, whose discreet omnipresence in the Porto Santo landscape usually goes unnoticed by the eye every day.
