About this product

Butterfly Conservation receives £10 from the sale of this trap to help them continue their fantastic conservation work.

The NHBS Moth Trap is a lightweight and highly portable trap, tested and approved by Butterfly Conservation.

The trap container is constructed from lightweight plastic panels covered with a light-coloured nylon material and it is easily assembled using velcro. It has two panels that help prevent moths escaping and the trap electrics are supported by a stainless steel frame that is attached to the container walls. This mains powered trap runs a single 20W blacklight bulb (included with the trap) and comes supplied with a 4.5m power lead wired to a standard UK plug. A benefit of these bulbs is that they will not shatter in contact with rain, however, like with every moth trap we would advise against using it in adverse weather. When fully assembled the trap measures approximately 30cm wide x 30cm deep x 50cm tall and only weighs around 2kg; much lighter than the typical solid plastic assemblies of other Skinner traps.

The trap comes supplied with a carry bag that you can use to transport and store the trap when not in use. This bag measures approximately 30cm wide and 45cm tall when all trap components are included.

The NHBS Moth trap is also available as a starter kit which includes 3 x 125ml Collecting Pots and the handy Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland to help you observe and identify your catch.

*When operating this trap please screw in the blacklight bulb tightly to ensure a waterproof seal. Take care not to over tighten the blub as this can damage the contact within the holder but screw until you feel some resistance. If in doubt plug in the electrics and if the bulb doesn’t light, turn the trap off and screw the bulb a little tighter before checking again. *

  • My first moth trap.
By Anthony 22 Apr 2020 Written for Moth Trap Only
The trap is very light and easy to pack up. I have only caught 9 spp. so far but we have had high cold winds and no cloud. Temperature at night around 3-5 °C. It doesn't seem to bother my neighbours.

  • Very good
By Anthony 26 May 2020 Written for Moth Trap Only
I have been using my trap for three months. I changed the position from flower beds to wildflower garden well away from the house. The catches have been very good. Recently 50 moths of 17 species. It seems to retain the catch well including big lively ones like Hawkmoth. Definitely recommend it.

  • First Moth Trap.
By Dave 2 Jul 2020 Written for Moth Trap Only
I only heard about moth trapping a few weeks ago so started my bit of research online... NHBS came up and I decided to go with them. I'm very pleased that I did. I bought their own portable moth trap at a very reasonable £135.00. It is extremely easy to use and well-made. I'm particularly impressed with the waterproof flat cable... First night out about 40 moths which I am now learning about... The service from NHBS has been second to none. Trap well packaged and DHL delivery which is always good... I will definitely be shopping with them again... A total recommend.

  • Brilliant, easy to assemble and use. Good catches!
By Andrew 1 Aug 2020 Written for Moth Trap Only
This is my first moth trap, after a lot of research, I chose this because it seemed simple and robust, as well as being endorsed by Butterfly Conservation. It is fantastic for a beginner like me. I just plug it and leave it out in my garden overnight and in the morning look at my catch. I catch between 10 and 25 moths each time (so far), many I never knew existed. It's very easy to use, store and assemble. It arrived quickly, even during the lockdown period. I'd highly recommend it who is starting this hobby. I am going to plant some more moth friendly plants next year to help diversify my species... still waiting to catch a hawk moth.

  • Good portable or beginners trap
By Jim 3 Feb 2021 Written for Moth Trap Only
I got this trap about a year ago, and it's worked well, including in rain (electrics are suitable for use in rain). Numbers of moths caught is variable through the year (as expected), but generally reasonable. It's good for beginners, as it won't catch too many species, so identifying your species won't take too long. However, you may find that catches are lower than with other/more expensive traps. It also packs down so can be portable.

The construction of the trap is good only for irregular trapping, it's not rigid like most other traps. Using it every week may wear out the box part of the trap given enough use. It may be if you get engrossed in trapping (like many do) you may want to move on to a better trap (Robinson traps will retain more species, and brighter lights will attract more).

  • Good first moth trap
By Ian 16 Aug 2022 Written for Starter Kit
My first moth trap, easy to set up and very pleased with results over past couple of weeks. Best night yesterday 81 macro moths of 26 species. Lots of micros too but not working on them yet as macros are more than enough to keep me busy for a few hours.

Media reviews

“The trap is very good, and comparably better in my view than equivalent 20W tube traps on the market currently though I haven’t run comparative studies as such. However, I do regularly run a similar sized black plastic trap with a similar 20W bulb, along with a Robinson 125W mercury vapour trap several metres away, as my standard night time trapping in my garden. Using the NHBS trap in an identical position, the NHBS trap has been surprisingly good, consistently catching more moths than I would expect each time, comparing it with the catches in the black plastic trap.

I like the NHBS Moth trap because it is covered with white nylon, which glows with UV light at night when the light is on. I think this helps attract the moths, and critically, by being fairly light inside the trap itself, the moths readily calm down and rest until morning. I also like the portability of the NHBS trap, and particularly that it doesn’t need a rain shield.

I would definitely recommend this trap.”
