About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and German

Fourteen years after publication of the Stratigraphic Table of Germany 2002 (STD 2002), the completely revised Stratigraphic Table of Germany 2016 (STD 2016) substitutes the earlier table, which in the meanwhile is out of print. The synopsis was compiled from members of the eight German stratigraphic subcommissions, with input from more than 80 authors from about 40 institutions. The table shows about 1600 German stratigraphic units of formation rank, lithostratigraphic groups, and their relation to the global stratigraphic scale. Moreover, regional series, stages and substages are shown, which are used since decades. Regional profiles were mostly grouped from west to east. In addition to the colour-coding of megafacies types and the indication of magmatic and metamorphic rocks, a vivid tableau of the geological history of Germany is emerging.

The differences between STD 2002 and STD 2016 show the progress achieved by the stratigraphic subcommissions during the past two decades. Many lithostratigraphic terms are new. This resulted from the transformation of earlier informal names to formations according to the rules of the In ternational Stratigraphic Code. Well known traditional names are still listed to facilitate comparison with literature.

As a result, STD 2016 is an indispensable stratigraphic tool. The corresponding explanations (ESTD 2017/18), pubished herein and in one of the succeeding issues of the German Journal of Geoloogy, are an integral part of the table. They aim at a better understanding and readability of the
manifold information of the STD 2016. They elucidate stratigraphic correlations and placements. In cases, they enable listing of additional lithostratigraphic units and outcrop regions, and correction of some mistakes. However, the addiional comments to STD 2002 and to its explanations also demonstrate that any table and explanations represent the status quo and are subject to advances in science.

Stratigraphy is not confined to national boundaries; it crosses language barriers. Although the table is intended to serve mostly the German readership at universities and museums, at the federal and regional geological services, and inndustry, the editors of ZDGG and DSK decided to publishhe the explanations bilingually to foster an integrated transnational stratigraphy. This will facilitate access to German stratigraphic terms by foreign-language scientists and enable at least a rapid first access to stratigraphy and regional geology. STD 2016 might be also the nucleus for potential future
correlation tables beyond national boundaries, respectively between adjacent countries.
