The high reptile diversity in Zambia and Malawi is driven by the region's tropical climate, divergent landscapes and wide variety of vegetation types. To date 240 species have been recorded in these two countries: 117 snakes, 108 lizards, 13 terrapins and tortoises, and two crocodiles. This new handy, pocket-sized guide – a first for these two countries – features 187 of the most commonly encountered, rare and beautiful snakes and other reptiles occurring in the region.

Darren Pietersen is a herpetologist specialising in African reptiles and amphibians. He is a freelance consultant, and a research associate in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria.
Luke Verburgt is a zoological scientist specialising in herpetology, and has worked across 19 African countries. He holds an MSc. in Zoology from the University of Pretoria, is director of the consultancy Enviro-Insight and extraordinary lecturer at the University of Pretoria, and is a registered scientific professional with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). He has published more than 30 scientific articles, which include several descriptions of new African herpetofauna species.
