About this book

Language: German

The Xanthophyceae are among the groups of algae whose study was slightly less promoted in recent decades. Compared with the other algae, the increase in newly described species is low. There is also very limited information on their distribution and ecology. Only excluded are those forms that are recognizable at first glance, because of striking morphology and therefore also occur in species lists. As the series Süßwasserflora is primarily an identification work, it was kept somewhat conservative in some respects. The author has not included many new biochemical and ultrastructural insights, as insufficient evidence has so far collated to support these. Further investigation may show that some green algae are Xanthophyceae that, under certain circumstances, store no starch and whose chromatophores are colored more green. This is especially true for those forms in which neither zoospores nor cysts were observed. Future pigment analysis will show where these forms belong.
