The Subterranean Beetles of the Balkan Peninsula

About this book

Language: English

The aim of this book is to provide a guide to the subterranean beetles of the Balkan peninsula (hypogean and endogean, microphthalmic and anophthalmic) for professional or non-professional entomologists. The approach of this book is based on the work of Vasil B. Guéorguiev (1977) which is a primary reference for the study of the hypogean fauna of the Balkans.

However, this book has adapted Guéorguiev's approach in many ways: firstly it deals only with Insecta: Coleoptera; secondly we include not only the hypogean fauna, but also endogean species; thirdly the geographical boundaries of the Balkan peninsula are taken in a broader concept, including the area covered by Guéorguiev's work, but also the Romanian parts of the Carpathian range: more or less the area covered by Decu and Negrea (1964); fourthly and last, some of Guéorguiev's zoogeographical zones are reinterpreted to match the present state of knowledge of the distribution area of many taxa which have been extensively sampled since Guéorguiev's work.

The goal is to give an exhaustive list of all described subterranean species and subspecies of Coleoptera as of June 30th 2016, with their updated geographical distribution and a complete list of primary references. Illustrations of at least one species of most of the genera are also provided.
