About this book

The chrysidid wasps, commonly known as cuckoo wasps or goldwasps, are among the most beautiful and colourful Hymenoptera. Maximilian Spinola was an active entomologist and described hundreds of species in different families of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Hemiptera. He was the first Italian who described a large variety of species and genera (Elampus and Stilbum) in the family Chrysididae. His impressive Hymenopteran collection was not available for researchers until the 1980s and his types remained unstudied. The authors examined the collection and found ninety-six types belonging to sixty-seven species. In this catalogue, some nomenclatural and taxonomic changes are proposed; six neotypes and twenty-four lectotypes are designated; two species are considered as nomina dubia, two species as nomina oblita and another two as nomina protecta; three new synonymies are proposed; historical data with comments on the current taxonomic position of all the species are given as well as the pictures of fifty-three types. ZooKeys 471: Annotated Type Catalogue of the Chrysididae (Insecta, Hymenoptera) Deposited in the Collection of Maximilian Spinola (1780–1857), Turin is part of a series studying the chrysidid types in the European Museums.
