NHBS Grapevine - The Best of Our Books & Equipment
#52
1st June 2017

About Us
In this edition: we highlight The Amphibians & Reptiles of Scotland, an excellent guide with a wealth of information on identification and distribution of all the native and wild-breeding species in Scotland. Also featured are: Mabberley’s Plant-Book, a portable dictionary of plants; Drawdown, which contains the hundred most substantive solutions to combat climate change and Kalahari Cheetahs, one of the first comprehensive studies of cheetah biology.

On the blog, our catalogue editor Leon Vlieger continues his series on polarised discussions in science, with this week’s post covering the arguments surrounding evolutionary biology. We also take a look at one of our local bird ringing groups, based at Slapton Ley, and show how they have been using some of our spare pallets.

Kalahari Cheetahs: Adaptations to an Arid Region
The cheetah, the fastest terrestrial animal, has widespread appeal amongst wildlife biologists and enthusiasts alike. However, like all large carnivores, it is increasingly threatened by habitat loss and its status is now classified as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN. Kalahari Cheetahs is the first comprehensive study of cheetah biology, and documents a wealth of direct observations of cheetah population biology and behavioural ecology.

Targeted conservation could protect more of Earth’s biodiversity
Research by Yale and the University of Grenoble finds that major gains in global biodiversity can be achieved if an additional 5% of land is set aside to protect key species.

Thinking big gives top predators the competitive edge
A new study finds that top predators can suppress mesopredators effectively (even completely) but only in the core of their geographic range, where their numbers are highest.
