Spruce's great work on South America, now available as a Pisces CD-book.

From the publisher's announcement:

An essential text for all those interested in the Amazon
Pisces Conservation are delighted to release both volumes of "Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon and Andes" on one CD, for Windows PCs and Macs, with fully searchable text and hyperlinks for ease of navigation. This is one of the rarest and most significant 19th century texts on the exploration of Amazonia, and remains both an important scientific work, and a thoroughly readable account.

Compiled and edited by Alfred Russel Wallace, "Notes of a Botanist" provide a fascinating insight into Spruce's years of exploration, and Spruce himself. Original copies of the book, which only ever went to a first edition, published in 1908, are now rare and much sought-after.

Richard Spruce was one of the foremost Victorian botanical explorers, who spent nearly 15 years exploring in the Amazon and Andes, between 1849 and 1864, enduring terrible hardship and sickness. One of the first Europeans to see many of the places he visited, the legacy of plants and objects collected, and his accounts of his discoveries, remain an extremely important contribution to our understanding of the botany, ethnology and history of South America.

The quality of reproduction of illustrations and text is excellent. The book is in Adobe Acrobat pdf format (with free Reader software supplied), allowing high-quality printing of the text and plates.
