About this book

Language: French

This book on marine mammals is the first volume in the series Atlas des Mammifères Sauvages de France. An innovative project due to its geographical influence (mainland and overseas), the atlas is produced in partnership with the Museum and the French Society for the Study and Protection of Mammals. This volume was produced in partnership with the Observatory Pelagis and 70 specialists participated in drafting the text.

With the second largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the world (over 11 million km2), France hosts 71 species of marine mammals. This volume represents a considerable improvement of our knowledge on the distribution of 16 species of carnivore, 53 species of Cetartiodactyla (which includes whales) and 2 speciesof Sirenia populating French waters. It synthesizes more than 90,000 observational data points collected since 2000 by around thirty organisations. Two complementary parts make up this volume. On the one hand, specific case studies allow researchers and naturalists to access updated information on the distribution of species, their biology, their population dynamics, threats they face and the monitoring and management measures already put in place. Furthermore, monographs by oceanic region meet the expectations of managers and governments by briefly presenting the territory and the species found there. Nine oceanic areas are presented: the North-East Atlantic (metropolitan France), the Northwest Atlantic (Saint Pierre and Miquelon), the Tropical Atlantic (Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy) , the equatorial Atlantic (Guyana), the tropical Indian ocean (Reunion, Mayotte and the Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean), the subtropical Indian ocean (St. Paul, Amsterdam) and the north of the Southern ocean (Kerguelen and Crozet), the Southern ocean (Adélie Land), the South Pacific (New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia) and the North Pacific (Clipperton). In addition to these case studies, the book includes an overview of the various tools of legal protection and species conservation.
