As part of the freshwater flora of Central Europe established by A. Pascher this completely new identification guide is published as volume 2, Part 1. The tradition of the version edited by F. Hustedt from 1930 has been largely retained, but the many new insights gained over the past 55 years have also been taken into account. This does not only apply to a large number of new taxa – new findings in the morphological structure analysis after the introduction of the SEM are just as important. These findings in particular have contributed significantly to the clarification of systematic problems.

Im Rahmen der von A. Pascher begründeten Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa erscheint als Band 2, Teil l, eine völlig neue Bearbeitung dieses Bestimmungswerkes. Die Tradition der von F. Hustedt bearbeiteten Fassung aus dem Jahre 1930 wurde weitgehend erhalten, aber auch die vielen in den vergangenen 55 Jahren hinzugekommenen Erkenntnisse berücksichtigt. Das betrifft nun aber nicht nur eine Vielzahl neuer Taxa, ebenso wichtig sind neue Erkenntnisse bei der morphologischen Strukturanalyse nach Neueinführung des REM. Insbesondere diese Erkenntnisse haben nicht unwesentlich zur Klärung systematischer Probleme beigetragen.
