The Checklist of Vascular Plants of Burundi provides a comprehensive enumeration list of the plants known to occur spontaneously in the country. The checklist is based on herbarium collection data supplemented with field observations and information obtained from the literature. The book comprises 3,860 species of vascular plants grouped in 1,290 genera and 216 families. In addition to the correct scientific name, each taxon listed comes with, (i) its most important synonym(s), (ii) its vernacular name(s) (when available) in Kirundi, (iii) a bibliographic reference; (iv) the citation of all known herbarium specimens, (v) and its distribution map across Burundi.

The book and an associated dynamic website – which will keep the dataset maintained and updated – will serve as a valuable basic information resource for planning further floristic exploration and for all future studies on the flora and its conservation.
