Conservation of protected areas usually suffers from two problems. First, local people are disallowed access to natural resources on which they depended for ages. Second, when people are displaced they rarely get compensation, and if they do the sums involved are paltry. This book shows how address these problems through community participation, and uses the experiences gained in conservation of the Great Himalayan National Park, India, as a case study.
