Anemia, a fern genus from the Anemiaceae family, is one of the oldest of extant fern genera going back to Lower Cretaceous times. Distribution is mostly in tropical America with 17 species found in Africa, Madagascar, Réunion, and India. This volume is a taxonomic monograph that includes keys, descriptions, black and white illustrations, and discussion of taxa with 115 species recognized.

Biography

John T. Mickel is senior Curator Emeritus in the Institute of Systematic Botany at The New York Botanical Garden, Dr. Mickel's research spans five decades centered on the vast study of the pteridophytes of Mexico, including more than 1,000 species. His long-term monographic studies of two largely tropical American fern genera, Anemia and Elaphoglossum, have resulted in several definitive publications on these groups.

Interpretation of ferns to the public has also been a major part of Dr. Mickel's career. More notably are his public lecturers on fern cultivation, a horticultural researcher on the cold-hardiness of temperate ferns, and a collaborator with growers to make more species available to the public. He is the founder and only secretary of the New York Fern Society, and founder of the American Fern Society's bulletin Fiddlehead Forum.
