This book outlines the University Botanic Gardens, Ljubljana's contribution to Target 8 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, which is a programme of the Convention on Biological Diversity, a multilateral treaty that came into force in December 1993. The Strategy’s vision is to halt the continuing loss of plant diversity and to secure a positive, sustainable future where human activities support the diversity of plant life. The goal of Target 8 is to have at least 75 per cent of threatened plant species in ex-situ collections, preferably in the country of origin, and at least 20 per cent available for recovery and restoration programmes. Their dried seed bank currently has about 3000 different plant species with over 12,000 bags, while the permanent seed bank has stored 702 species, which is 20,3 % of the flora of Slovenia.
