About this book

Language: Spanish

There are numerous identification guides to identify Spanish raptors by their plumage, it is much more difficult to find information on identification of these species by their skeleton. Therefore, Spanish raptor specialist Víctor García Matarranz has developed this guide to identify the skeletal remains of raptors. Designed as a quick-identification guide, it has been designed for use in the field, without the need to resort to sophisticated methods beyond the use of calipers and a ruler. On many occasions these are not even necessary.

This first part deals with 9 large species: the cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Spanish imperial eagle (Aquila adalberti), Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata), short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), and Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus). These are the most important species conservation-wise, as they suffer a higher mortality due to collisions with electric power lines. The intention is to provide a tool to identify the corpses under the lines when they have been on the ground for a while, making it difficult to identify them by means of plumage characteristics.

The guide is illustrated with many photos of the skeletal remains, shown in standardized photographic plates accounting for colour and background, and with rulers inserted in the images that allows the reader to appreciate the biometry of all the illustrated parts.
