About this book

Language: Spanish

There are numerous identification guides to identify Spanish raptors by their plumage, it is much more difficult to find information on identification of these species by their skeleton. Therefore, Spanish raptor specialist Víctor García Matarranz has developed this guide to identify the skeletal remains of raptors. Designed as a quick-identification guide, it has been designed for use in the field, without the need to resort to sophisticated methods beyond the use of calipers and a ruler. On many occasions these are not even necessary.

This second part deals with 11 species of medium-sized diurnal raptors: the osprey (Pandion haliaetus), booted eagle (Hieraetus pennatus), common buzzard (Buteo buteo), red kite (Milvus milvus), black kite (Milvus migrans), European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), hen harrier (Circus cyaneus), and Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus). The guide excludes the six smaller diurnal raptors (two species of kestrels, the hawk, the hobby, the merlin and the elanio), which will be treated in the third installment.

The guide is illustrated with many photos of the skeletal remains, shown in standardized photographic plates accounting for colour and background, and with rulers inserted in the images that allows the reader to appreciate the biometry of all the illustrated parts.
