Account Manager (trainee)

NHBS (www.nhbs.com) is a world leading online retailer supplying wildlife, ecology and conservation books, equipment, and magazines to private customers, construction companies, ecological consultants, libraries, and universities around the world. 

We are looking for an Account Manager (trainee) to join our busy Sales & Marketing team in our offices in Totnes, Devon. 

Following a successful training period, you will act as Account Manager for some of our biggest customers, keeping in touch with customers by email, phone and video call, and in the future (Covid-19 dependent) you will make regular sales trips and represent NHBS at conferences in the UK and across Europe. 

A background in sales is not required but an enthusiasm for nature and NHBS products is key. You will work with passionate people and receive both formal training as well as on the job mentoring from your manager. Once trained you will understand each part of the business so that you can best advise customers and nurture relationships. You will work closely with our new Bonn-based subsidiary so knowledge of German or another major European language is desired.

Applicants will be expected to adhere to strict Covid safety rules in our office including 2 metres plus distancing at all times, use of Facemasks and/or Visors as required, and observance of all other Covid guidance provided.

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Building relationships with existing and potential customers
  • Using the company CRM application - Netsuite - to keep track of customer quotations, orders and queries
  • Working alongside our Customer Service team to make sure our customers receive the very best service
  • Visiting existing and potential customers, selling the NHBS brand
  • Proactively building great relationships with potential customers
  • Demonstrating and presenting products for customers
  • Reaching out to a wide range of customers - professional ecologists, non governmental organisations, universities, research institutes, libraries and construction companies, among others.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Confident networking skills
  • Great planning and organisation skills
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Interest or background in ecology and conservation
  • Decisive personality and ability to make quick decisions
  • A passion for environmental travel and a willingness to travel by land rather than air within Europe
  • An ability to think strategically and generate new ideas
  • Strong English verbal and writing skills
  • Knowledge of a major European language would be advantageous

Our offer to you:

This permanent position is available immediately. Starting salary: £18,000 p.a. based on a 37.5 hour week Monday - Friday, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a including bank holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.

Wildlife Equipment Specialist

Founded in 1985, NHBS Ltd (www.nhbs.com) is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, and private customers around the world. In addition to the retail business, NHBS manufactures equipment in an on-site workshop and publishes two magazines.

NHBS is looking for a Wildlife Equipment Specialist to join our busy Wildlife Equipment team in our office in Totnes. The successful applicant will work with other wildlife equipment team members running the equipment business and providing technical advice to customers, as well as working alongside the Sales & Marketing team to generate new content, identify potential new customers and strengthen relationships with existing customers.

Applicants will be expected to adhere to strict Covid safety rules in our office including social distancing at all times, use of facemasks and/or visors as required, and observance of all other Covid guidance provided.

Key Responsibilities:-

  • Customer support – you will provide advice and support to customers on our wide range of equipment
  • Product range – you will help source new products, prepare product descriptions, create images and monitor product performance
  • Marketing – you will help to prepare marketing materials including blog posts and emails
  • Sales – you will support the sales and marketing team by building relationships with new and existing customers
  • Identifying new customers – you will help identify potential new customers and then work out the best way to contact them
  • Purchasing – you will deal with queries about products and pricing, requests for information and supplier returns
  • Customer relations – you will contact customers by phone and occasionally in person to offer information about our products and services
  • Conference Attendance – you will represent NHBS at conferences across the UK and Europe, taking along a stand with our products and getting to know our customers 

Skills:-

Essential

  • A strong interest in and good practical knowledge of natural history and ecology, and the equipment that people use to survey, study and enjoy it
  • A good telephone manner and outstanding written communication skills
  • Outgoing and confident - you will be comfortable talking to a wide range of people including academics, consultants, teachers and members of the public
  • Numeracy skills, the ability to confidently use basic maths and spreadsheets
  • Above all, we value a common-sense approach, critical thinking and a willingness to learn new skills

Desirable

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field and the ability to work to a consistently high standard
  • A second language in addition to English
  • Full UK driving licence
