Web Developer

Summary

NHBS (www.nhbs.com) is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, libraries, academics and private customers around the world. NHBS also publishes two magazines for naturalists and ecologists and manufactures some of the survey equipment we sell.

We are growing and need to strengthen our team with another in-house web developer.

What we’re looking for

We seek a developer to work full-time in employment in our offices in Totnes, Devon. Working as part of our small in-house development team, the appointee will be responsible for building new web functionality to assist online sales, marketing, order processing and customer management. This is a very versatile role and a great opportunity to learn how a modern e-commerce business works from the ground up.

We break work down into small fast projects and rapidly implement core functionality together with a full-time graphical designer. You need to be able to deliver innovative solutions on time and be happy pitching in with a wide range of IT odds and ends e.g. sys admin, hardware, testing etc.

Requirements

Our offer to you

Our office is based in Totnes. The successful candidate will be joining a diverse and friendly workforce of 42 staff in an open office environment.

This position reports to the Head of IT.

This full-time permanent position is available immediately. Salary: £20000 - £23000 (or above, depending on experience). It is based on a 37.5 hour week Monday - Friday, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a, including Bank Holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.

Wildlife Equipment Specialist

Founded in 1985, NHBS (www.nhbs.com) is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, libraries, academics and private customers around the world. NHBS also publishes two magazines for naturalists and ecologists and manufactures some of the survey equipment we sell.

This is an opportunity for a highly motivated person to join our busy wildlife equipment team and become involved in both wildlife conservation and a rapidly growing business. The successful applicant will work with other wildlife equipment team members running the equipment business and providing technical advice to customers as well as working alongside the marketing team, generating new content, identifying potential new equipment customers and strengthening relationships with existing customers.

NHBS is based in Totnes, Devon, however some UK and European travel may be required. On-the-job training will be provided.

Responsibilies

You will carry out a wide range of equipment related tasks alongside the existing team of wildlife equipment specialists. Specific tasks may include:

  • Product range – you will help source new products, prepare product descriptions, create images and monitor product performance
  • Marketing – you will help to prepare marketing materials including blog posts and emails
  • Identifying new customers – you will help identify potential new customers and then work out the best way to contact them
  • Purchasing – you will deal with queries about products and pricing, requests for information, and supplier returns
  • Customer support – you will administrate the returns process, deal with customer queries and contact suppliers
  • Customer relations – you will contact customers by phone and occasionally in person to offer information about our products and services
  • Conference Attendance – you will represent NHBS at conferences across the UK and Europe, taking along a stand with our products to sell and (more importantly) getting to know our customers
  • Other tasks in the company as required
Skills required
  • A strong interest in and good practical knowledge of natural history and ecology, and the equipment that people use to survey, study and enjoy it
  • A good telephone manner and outstanding written communication skills
  • Outgoing and confident, you will be comfortable talking to a wide range of people including academics, consultants, teachers and members of the public
  • An undergraduate degree in a related field and the ability to work to a consistently high standard
  • Numeracy skills, the ability to confidently use basic maths and spreadsheets
  • Above all, we value a common-sense approach, critical thinking and a willingness to learn new skills
Our offer to you

We have been selling natural history and science books since 1985, ecological survey equipment since 2009, and publishing magazines and manufacturing survey equipment since 2016. This position reports to Steve Powell, Equipment Manager.
