Hyacintorchis tells the story of the discovery of a new orchid species near the North Sea and provides a glimpse into the life of a botanical illustrator. In March 2020 a plant species new to the Netherlands was discovered in the town of Noordwijk: the orchid species Himantoglossum robertianum, also known as Hyacintorchis in Dutch. One of the biggest orchid species in Europe, it had not been observed in the Netherlands before. Six individuals were discovered that spring. This orchid species originate from the Mediterranean and due to climate change is shifting its distribution north, following the Atlantic coast. In the Netherlands they have now been found in the dunes near Noordwijk. The botanical illustrator Esmée Winkel was given the opportunity to document this discovery.

Hyacintorchis vertelt het verhaal van de ontdekking van een nieuwe orchideeënsoort aan de Noordzee en geeft een mooi inkijkje in het werk van een botanisch illustrator. In maart 2020 werd er in Noordwijk een plantensoort ontdekt die nieuw is voor Nederland: de Hyacintorchis of Reuzenorchis. Het is een van de grootste orchideeënsoorten in Europa. De soort is nog niet eerder gezien in Nederland. Zes exemplaren zijn er afgelopen voorjaar ontdekt. De reuzenorchis is een soort uit het Middellandse Zeegebied die zich door veranderingen in het klimaat steeds noordelijker langs de Atlantische kust heeft gevestigd. In Nederland komt ze voor in de Hollandse Duinen bij Noordwijk. Esmée Winkel kreeg de kans om als botanisch illustrator deze ontdekking vast te leggen.
