The lithostratigraphic unit of the Lower Lias has yielded a rich ammonite fauna from which more than 200 genera were created by successive authors. The first inventory of these genera, exhaustive for the time, was carried out by Arkell in the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology (1957); this work was revised by Howarth in 2013, in an update of this treatise, with regard to Jurassic ammonites. However, these authors limited themselves to a summary description of all these genera, without listing the species assigned to them. It is therefore necessary to refer to a multitude of different publications to find this information.

This work does not aim to provide a detailed study of all the genera of the Lower Lias, but provides an inventory and classification of these genera and the species assigned to them, illustrating them on 45 photographic plates, with another 12 plates of accompanying fauna. This inventory is not limited to European faunas alone, but also lists those from the rest of the world, highlighting their affinities with Tethyan faunas.

This will be an indispensable work for collectors and palaeontologists.

Le Lias inférieur a livré une riche faune d’ammonites à partir de laquelle plus de 200 genres ont été créés par les auteurs successifs. Le premier inventaire de ces genres, exhaustif pour l’époque, a été réalisé par Arkell dans le Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology (1957); travail révisé par Howarth en 2013, dans une mise à jour de ce traité, en ce qui concerne les ammonites jurassiques. Cependant ces auteurs se sont limités à une description sommaire de tous ces genres, sans recenser les espèces qui leur ont été attribuées. Il faut donc se rapporter a une multitude de publications différentes pour trouver ces renseignements.

Le présent travail n’a pas pour ambition d’établir une étude détaillée de tous les genres du Lias inférieur, mais se borne à un essai d’inventaire et de classification de ces genres et des espèces qui leur ont été rattachées. Cet inventaire ne se limite pas aux seules faunes européennes, mais recense également celles du reste du monde, en mettant en évidence leurs affinités avec les faunes téthysiennes.

Un ouvrage indispensable aux collectionneurs et aux paléontologues.
