With 178 animal species distributed in 7 phyla, the subsoil of Pays-Fort, an area in the region of Centre-Val de Loire, offers a very varied image of marine life during a period of the Lower Cenomanian corresponding to the Mantelliceras saxbii sub-zone. The remarkable quality of fossilization allows the observation of complete specimens in species where it is rarer elsewhere: in particular the ammonites with turriliticone unwinding of the genera Hypoturrilites and Mariella.

The exploration of the sedimentary layers of Pays-Fort has thus enabled us to shed new light on the Cenomanian of the South-East of the Paris Basin. They retain the imprint of a living environment that is probably quite different from that of the Manceau stratotype during the same period, as well as that of the Charente deposits. They have more affinities with the Boulonnais and England cups.

The fauna collected, although it is not new compared to that described in the other sites around the Paris Basin, nevertheless presents two notable peculiarities in its assemblage: the richness and diversity of bivalves and sponges. Thanks to clear and precise identification keys, this book will allow amateurs to identify their fossil discoveries.

Avec 178 espèces animales réparties dans 7 phyla, le sous-sol du Pays Fort offre une image très variée de la vie marine durant une période du Cénomanien inférieur correspondant à la sous-zone à Mantelliceras saxbii. La remarquable qualité de fossilisation permet l’observation de spécimens complets chez des espèces où cela est plus rare ailleurs : en particulier les ammonites avec déroulement turriliticone des genres Hypoturrilites et Mariella.

L’exploration des couches sédimentaires du Pays Fort nous a ainsi permis d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur le Cénomanien du Sud-est du Bassin Parisien. Elles gardent l’empreinte d’un milieu de vie probablement assez différent de celui du stratotype manceau à la même période, ainsi que de celui des dépôts charentais. Elles présentent davantage d’affinités avec les coupes du Boulonnais et d’Angleterre.

La faune collectée, si elle n’est pas nouvelle par rapport à celle décrite dans les autres gisements du pourtour du Bassin Parisien, présente tout de même deux particularités notables dans son assemblage : la richesse et la diversité des bivalves et des spongiaires. Grâce à des clés d’identification claires et précises, cet ouvrage permettra aux amateurs d’identifier leurs découvertes.
