The two authors have been traveling for several decades to visit all the ecosystems of the islands of the Mascarene archipelago (Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues) in search of orchids, explorations for which they have been able to benefit from the help of a large network of professional and amateur botanists. In addition to these field surveys, they have adopted a rigorous scientific approach by working in large international herbaria (Paris, Kew, Geneva, etc.), by studying the standard specimens of the species, and by comparing their samples with the first descriptions (accompanied by their dissection plates), made by previous authors. They benefited for this from the advice of Jean Bosser, a specialist in Madagascar and Mascarene orchids.

The work begins with a presentation of the history of botanical exploration and the description of the orchids of these islands since the first explorations of the middle of the 18th century. It continues with a presentation of the biology, morphology and systematics of orchids. The main part of the work is then made up of individual technical entries of 50 species, as well as all the subspecies and varieties. For each species, the book details the history of its knowledge, its description (with reference to standard specimens), its geographical distribution, and finally the biology and ecology. The book ends with a presentation of the threats hanging over these species and their IUCN status, justifying reinforced regulatory measures.

Compared to previous syntheses published on orchids of the Mascarene archipelago, this work takes into account all the species of this archipelago and establishes a complete state of knowledge, with detailed presentations of all the species discovered by the authors. It thus updates and completes the inventory of orchids in this territory, by adding 83 species which had never been mentioned previously from the Mascarene archipelago. It also constitutes a solid basis for subsequent taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on orchid speciation, and, more generally, on the mechanisms of the evolution of biodiversity in these territories of the Indian Ocean.

Les deux auteurs parcourent depuis plusieurs décennies tous les écosystèmes des îles de l'archipel des Mascareignes à la recherche des orchidées, explorations pour lesquelles ils ont pu bénéficier de l'aide d'un réseau important de botanistes professionnels et amateurs. Parallèlement à ces prospections de terrain, ils ont adopté une démarche scientifique rigoureuse en travaillant dans les grands herbiers internationaux (Paris, Kew, Genève...), en y étudiant les spécimens types des espèces, et en comparant leurs échantillons avec les premières descriptions (accompagnées de leurs planches de dissection), faites par les auteurs anciens. Ils ont bénéficié pour cela des conseils avisés de Jean Bosser, spécialiste incontesté des orchidées de Madagascar et des Mascareignes.

I'ouvrage débute par une présentation de l'historique de l'exploration botanique et de la description des orchidées de ces îles depuis les premières prospections du milieu du 18me siècle. Il se poursuit par une présentation de la biologie, de la morphologie et de la systématique des orchidées. L'essentiel de l'ouvrage est ensuite constitué par des fiches techniques individuelles qui détaillent pour chaque espèce l'historique de sa connaissance, sa description (avec référence aux spécimens types), sa répartition géographique, et enfin la biologie et l'écologie de l'espèce. I'ouvrage se termine par une présentation des menaces qui pèsent sur ces espèces et de leur statut U.I.C.N., justifiant de mesures règlementaires de protection renforcées.

Par rapport aux synthèses antérieures publiées sur les prchidées dans l'archipel des Mascareignes, cet ouvrage prend en compte l'ensemble des espèces de cet archipel et en établit un état des connaissances complet, avec des présentations détaillées de toute les espèces découvertes par les auteurs. Il actualise ainsi et complète l'inventaire des orchidées de ce territoire, en ajoutant 83 qui n'avaient jamais été mentionnées antérieurement dans l'archipel des Mascareignes. Il constitue aussi une base solide pour des études taxonomiques et phylogénétiques ultérieures sur la spéciation des orchidées et, de manière plus générale, sur les mécanismes de l'évolution de la biodiversité dans ces territoires de l'Océan indien.
