Hyraxes & Aardvarks (Hyracoidea - Tubulidentata))

These two orders are both part of the superorder Afrotheria (though the latter encompasses more than these two orders).

The hyraxes are small, furry herbivores. Superficially they resemble rodents, but taxonomically they are closer to elephants and manatees. There are currently four species recognised, all living in Africa and the Middle East.

The only living member of the order Tubulidentata today is the aardvark, which feeds almost exclusively on ants and termites. For a long time, therefore, aardvarks and anteaters were grouped together, until it was recognised that they evolved from two different families and the observed similarities were due to convergent evolution. Pig-like in its appearance, it closest living relatives are elephant shrews, tenrecs and golden moles. Aardvarks are native to sub-Saharan Africa.
