About this book

Language: German

The Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel is one of the most important, but also one of the most controversial natural scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an enthusiastic supporter of Darwin, he worked on the continuation and popularization of the theory of evolution and thus became a symbolic figure in the worldview struggles of the time.

The family correspondence from April 1857 to March 1859, published in this third volume, shows how Haeckel consistently pursued his academic career after completing his doctorate. It all started with study visits to Prague and Vienna, where he sat in on various clinics and deepened his physiological knowledge with Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke and Carl Ludwig. Returning to Berlin, Haeckel passed his medical state exam and was confronted with the sudden death of his mentor Johannes Müller. The beginning of his love affair with Anna Sethe and the influence of professors Max Schultze and Carl Gegenbaur, who opened up new perspectives for him, carried him through the crisis and discovery phase that followed: a lengthy research trip to Italy to gather material for a habilitation there. After an intensive period of preparation at Johannes Müller's Anatomical Museum, Haeckel finally began working there in January 1859 and the present "Hesperian Travel Letters" accompany him on his first stops in Florence and Rome.
