About this book

Language: German

The Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel is one of the most important, but also one of the most controversial natural scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an enthusiastic supporter of Darwin, he worked on the continuation and popularization of the theory of evolution and thus became a symbolic figure in the worldview struggles of the time.

The fourth volume of family correspondence extends from March to November 1859 and documents the continuation of his educational and research journey in Italy. In Naples, he tried to develop an independent research program that would secure him an academic position and at the same time his marriage to Anna Sethe. After this failed, Haeckel used the summer for hiking, botanizing and drawing. On the crossing to Ischia, he met the poet Hermann Allmers and together they travelled to the ancient archaeological sites as well as Capri and Sicily. From October 1859, Haeckel worked intensively in the Bay of Messina and concentrated on the radiolarians, the work which was to form the basis for his monograph, which was awarded the Cothenius Medal of Leopoldina in 1864.
