About this book

Language: German

This multi-volume work offers a comprehensive overview of the entire herpetofauna of Europe. For each species of reptile and amphibian found in Europe, detailed species-specific data and information are compiled. Specialists were invited to write the treatment of each species. The careful editing by the publisher leads to a great uniformity of the entire work.

This present volume of the manual has a special position in the series for several reasons. The island groups treated here belong to Europe politically, but are geographically distinct parts of Africa. However, since the islands – never affected by volcanism – never had permanent contact with Africa, a unique endemic fauna developed there, amongst which are the most spectacular living representatives of the lizards.

This little "Galapagos in front of Europe's doorstep" is the subject of this volume, which probably gives for the first time an overview of the interesting herpetofauna of these island groups. In addition to five gecko species, three skinks and eight lizards are described. A special chapter deals with the giant fossil lizards of the Canaries, of which one species has recently been rediscovered as a "living fossil".
