About this book

Sessile plants need to rapidly respond to drastic environmental changes. Unlike differentiated animal cells, most differentiated plant cells are totipotent. Consequently plants have flexible developmental programs that are highly adaptable to the environment.

An intriguing and important question in our understanding of plant developmental program and responses to the environment is what kinds of strategies and mechanisms plant cells use for the transmission and the integration of various developmental and environmental signals. The answer to this question is emerging mostly owing to research using model plants such as Arabidopsis and rice. To efficiently transmit unique environmental, developmental and hormonal signals, plants use signaling mechanisms and networks that integrate ancient and universal intracellular signals and signaling mechanisms, such as calcium, Rho family GTPases, and MAP kinase cascade, with their own inventions such as calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs), novel regulators and effectors of Rho GTPases, and novel scaffolding proteins.

This book will deal with major known signaling mechanisms and several representative intracellular signaling networks in plants, integrating comprehensive reviews and insights from leading experts in the field and will be a valuable resource for all researchers and professionals in plant biochemistry and biology.
