About this book

Language: French

This document presents the current state of knowledge on the croaker (Argyrosomus regius) based on data from the literature. The world fishery for the species is limited to the Atlantic at 8000 tonnes and the Mediterranean at 1000 tonnes per year. In France, recruitment of the species into the natural environment is uncertain. There are significant fluctuations in inputs (100 to 700 tonnes per year) that are principally composed of small, low-value individuals. This species possesses numerous qualities that make it a good candidate for production and breeding on the French coast: quality and flavour of its meat is highly appreciated, there are high selling prices for fish of more than 2 kg in weight, it shows fast and optimal growth between 16 and 20 °C, and is able to tolerate various saltwater concentrations (euryhaline). Two French companies in the Mediterranean have started commercial production of croaker.
