About this book

Language: French witn bilingual keys in English and French

Mantises are charismatic predators whose diversity is important in tropical rainforests. In French Guiana, there are currently 78 species, each more extravagant than the last. Paradoxically, their biology and ecology are very poorly known and it is impossible, to date, to draw up a complete inventory of the species present in South America. To fill this gap, the author collected all available information for about ten years to create a reliable and current database. A significant taxonomic and systematic revision work was carried out to produce a precise list of the species present in French Guiana. Finally, close collaboration with a network of local entomologists made it possible to collect important information for this group of insects (distribution, phenology, etc.).

After an introductory part devoted to the biology of mantises, their living environment, and observation and collection methods, the author offers identification keys (in French and English) and very complete descriptive sheets for each species (accompanied by photos of the habitus, collection specimens, and individuals in the wild, as well as photos of morphological details and genitalia of males, allowing to validate identifications). In the final part, the author draws up assessments of this synthesis work, highlighting certain gaps in the sampling and opening up perspectives for future prospecting and research work.

This illustrated fauna of the different species present in French Guiana is intended to facilitate the identification of species and to generate field studies. It is aimed at naturalists, professional or amateur entomologists, managers of natural areas, and more generally at all actors involved in the protection and conservation of French Guiana's natural heritage.
