About this book

Language: Czech

The renowned Czech painter and book illustrator Zdeněk Michael František Burian (1905–1981) is considered one of the most influential palaeoartists of all time and is best known internationally for his paintings of dinosaurs, extinct mammals and prehistoric humans.

The book Pravěký svět Zdeňka Buriana, Kniha 3: Cesta k Člověka concludes the trilogy dedicated to Burian's palaeoart. The third volume is dedicated to his famous artistic reconstructions of the species Homo erectus, but mainly Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons, including scenes from the life of the legendary mammoth hunters from Dolní Věstonice. In addition to iconic paintings known from school blackboards and textbooks, the book also contains a number of illustrations for short stories by Josef Augusta, which best combine two of Burian's life themes – prehistory and adventure. In addition to many never-before-reproduced works, the book also includes a chapter on Burian's illustrations for fiction books with prehistoric motifs, such as Obručev's Plutonia, Doyle's The Lost World or the works of Eduard Štorch, all supplemented by a generous pictorial appendix. The professional texts for this title were written by prominent Czech experts in the fields of palaeoanthropology and archaeology: Václav Vančata, Petr Neruda, and Martin Oliva.

This volume is 250 × 337 mm in size and weighs close to 4 kg. The text is in Czech and the publisher has confirmed that there are no plans to translate this into English.
