An interview with Heather Buttivant
Rock Pool is an eye-opening, enchanting journey into the miniature worlds of rock pools with an author who will change the way you view even the most ordinary creatures – from crabs to barnacles, blennies to anemones – forever.

NHBS have a limited number of copies signed by Heather Buttivant who recently visited the NHBS offices. She also took the time to answer our questions about her book.

Read more in our Q&A with author Heather Buttivant.
NHBS Guide to Kick sampling

Kick sampling is a useful method for collecting and monitoring freshwater invertebrates from shallow waters, for example rivers. Our manufactured nets are the industry standard for kick sampling and are widely used by environment agencies and ecological professionals.

For more information on kick sampling or to see our selection of equipment, read our NHBS guide to kick sampling.

Bat Skulls
Making up one of the largest groups of mammals, bats are a diverse bunch with morphological variety in ears, noses, jaws and these features cause huge differences in skull shapes. Scientists now believe that echolocation and diet is thought to be the driver of diverse skull shapes after conducting microCT scans on over 200 species.

Virus Diversity
A global survey of the ecological diversity of viruses in the oceans has identified nearly 200,000 species, vastly exceeding the previously known figure of 15,000. This survey has highlighted the importance of microbes in the marine environment and how they should no longer be ignored in ocean ecosystem modelling.

Ash Dieback Costs
The true economic cost of Ash Dieback in Britain has been predicted to be £15 billion. A team of researchers have calculated this from costs arising from clearing dead and dying trees and the lost benefits from trees e.g. water and air purification as well as carbon sequestration.
