Wild Flowers of the Algarve

A word from the author on this series:

"The idea for the series of books 'Wild Flowers of the Algarve' was born in 2008. During my frequent walks in the Algarve, with friends of a walking club, as well as alone with my dog, I became fascinated by the many beautiful plants growing wild. I wanted to know to which species they belonged. That is why I often took a small part of a plant home and looked in books and searched the internet for the name. Very soon I started drawing the plants I brought along. The drawings were made full size on A3-sized paper sheets. They were done in pencil and afterwards coloured with water colours as realistic as possible. Very soon I had a portfolio filled with drawings. People who saw the drawings were excited about my work and asked me what I was planning to do with them. And thus the idea of a book was born.

However, I now had so many drawings, it was too much for one book, I could create several. That is why I sorted them in drawings of shrubs and trees and drawings of herbaceous plants.

Now, at the end of November 2011 the book with the drawings of trees and shrubs is printed. It is volume I of the series of books.

Volume II contains drawings of herbaceous plants, which I made in the period 2008-2010. It is intended that this volume appears in 2012.

Meanwhile I am well advanced in volume III. It contains drawings I made during the year 2011 of grasses growing in the Algarve. Grasses are not included in volume II, although they are herbaceous plants. The intention is that this volume will be published in 2013.

I have also started with volume IV. This volume shows more herbaceous plants. These are plants I first encountered in 2011 or that I have found earlier, but not yet drawn for volume II. Publication of this part is scheduled for 2014.

Maybe there will be a volume V, on the flora of the western tip of the Algarve, near Cabo Sao Vicente. The flora of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina is a very special one, with lots of plants found nowhere else."
