Barbara Hogarth was for almost 20 years the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI) recorder for the vice-county of Angus. This role, the many years spent gathering records, and her work surveying and mapping vegetation has afforded her greater awareness of plants that tend to be overlooked and it was this awareness that prompted her study of Alchemilla Lady’s-mantle micro-species. In 2008 Barbara collected a small piece of Alchemilla growing by the Moulzie Burn, in Glen Clova. This turned out to be Alchemilla glaucescens, a rare species which had remained unnoticed in an area visited by many eminent botanists over the years. This was followed in 2010 by her finding Alchemilla acutiloba on a roadside verge in Glen Isla. As these plants had obviously been overlooked, she set about finding good information to help with identification, knowing that Alchemilla was a group with a reputation for being difficult. In the course of her research, it became clear that more straightforward guidance on identification was needed and this study aims to fill that void and, hopefully, stimulate enough interest to take our knowledge of these fascinating plants a step forward. Fully illustrated with photographs and annotated diagrams of the various Alchemilla micro-species found in northern Scotland and their variants.
