About this book

Language: French

The French region of Alsace lies in the east of the country and borders Germany and Switzerland. Since 2006, the Office des Données Naturalistes d'Alsace (ODONAT) has been coordinating a project to realize the publication of distribution atlases of the Alsatian wildlife published in the series Atlas de la faune d'Alsace. To do this, four specialized regional associations were involved: BUFO for reptiles and amphibians, which published the first volume of the collection in 2010, the LPO for birds, IMAGO for insects and GEPMA for mammals.

The Atlas de Répartition des Mammifères d'Alsace was made possible thanks to the collection of mammalogical observations coordinated by the GEPMA during the period 2000-2011. This inventory has brought together more than 40,000 data points. The distribution of the 76 mammal species shown in the atlas is based on these data and is detailed in the form of distribution maps divided into a grid of 5 × 5 km. For each species, a monographic entry was written by regional naturalists. In addition, specific chapters develop varied themes relating to Alsatian mammals such as biodiversity, climatology, geography, taxonomy and conservation. The book has several objectives: to get the most accurate picture possible of the status of each species over the period considered, to compare and discuss these results in light of past regional statutes, to identify the threats to the species and their habitats and, if any, propose specific conservation measures.
