About this book

Language: French

Established in 2010 at the initiative of the association La Chevêche, the Atlas project of the Breeding Birds of Marseille is the culmination of three years of observation. A tremendous mobilization of ornithologists was necessary to establish a rich database that lists all the bird species present in the Marseille area, south of France. A total of 89 breeding species have been counted, and no less than 269 bird species have been observed in Marseille if we take into account migratory and wintering birds.

One of the advantages of this atlas is its geographic setting. It includes, of course, areas of high natural heritage around Marseille (including Calanques National Park). But it also provides an inventory of the avifauna of urban areas, areas that until now have aroused little interest of naturalists and yet contain many riches.

This work therefore aims to present the current status of breeding birds throughout the town of Marseille as accurately as possible, using 300 photos and hundreds of maps and diagrams. It also analyzes the role of different species of birds in the Marseille landscape, and changes in the avian populations of Marseille, notably resulting from changes in human activities, both in urban and natural areas.
