The Atlas of Spanish Minerals is a unique work of its kind, as it brings together for the first time images of 927 mineral species found in Spain, some hitherto unpublished, through 2,219 photographs. It is the most extensive and detailed catalogue of Spanish mineralogy, a true treatise, rigorous, visual and complete, resulting from an enormous work of selecting pieces from various locations and preserved in different collections and museums. Likewise, the book is the culmination of the monumental work in nine volumes Minerales y Minas de España, which Miguel Calvo Rebollar began to publish in 2002. Of high scientific value, but also aesthetic, the Atlas of Spanish Minerals is illustrated with images of great beauty, some of them made using the most advanced photographic techniques.

The book ranges from classic Spanish minerals, such as fluorite or pyro-morphite, to recent discoveries, such as alcantarillaite and fehrite. To document the different species all available photographic techniques have been used, preferably optical photography with macro and micro photography techniques, but also the most advanced photographic techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, thin foil microscopy and reflected light microscopy. To this end, scientists, institutions and private collectors from various parts of the world have collaborated. In the case of minerals that had not yet been cited in Spain and in that of rare minerals, the specimens have been analyzed to confirm their identity by SEM/EDS and by X-ray diffraction.

Like no other work published before, Atlas of Spanish Minerals allows the reader to discover the great abundance, variety and beauty of the minerals of the country, a mineralogical wealth gathered for the first time in a well-crafted book of large format, in a bilingual Spanish-English edition that responds to the international interest that Spanish mineralogy arouses. The work is structured according to Strunz’s classification and has a complete onomastic index.

El Atlas de Minerales de España / Atlas of Spanish Minerals es una obra única en su género, pues reúne por primera vez las 927 especies citadas, algunas inéditas hasta ahora, a través de 2 219 fotografías. Se trata del más extenso y detallado catálogo de la mineralogía española, un verdadero tratado, riguroso, visual y completo, resultante de un enorme trabajo de selección de piezas procedentes de diversas localidades y conservadas en diferentes colecciones y museos. Asimismo, el libro es la culminación de la monumental obra en nueve volúmenes Minerales y Minas de España, que Miguel Calvo Rebollar empezó a publicar en 2002. De elevado valor científico, pero también estético, el Atlas de minerales de España está ilustrado con imágenes de gran belleza, parte de ellas realizadas mediante las técnicas fotográficas más avanzadas.

El libro incluye desde los minerales clásicos en España, como la fluorita o la piromorfita, hasta descubrimientos recientes, como la alcantarillaíta y la fehrita. Para documentar las distintas especies se han utilizado todas las técnicas fotográficas disponibles, preferentemente la fotografía óptica con técnicas de macro y de micro fotografía, pero también las técnicas fotográficas más avanzadas como la microscopía electrónica de barrido, la microscopía de lámina delgada y la de luz reflejada. Para ello, se ha contado con la colaboración de científicos, instituciones y coleccionistas particulares de diversos lugares del mundo. En el caso de los minerales que no habían sido citados todavía en España y en el de los minerales raros, los ejemplares han sido analizado para confirmar su identidad mediante SEM/ EDS y por difracción de rayos X.

Atlas de Minerales de España permite descubrir la gran abundancia, variedad y belleza de los minerales del país, una riqueza mineralógica reunida por primera vez en un libro de gran formato y cuidada factura, en una edición bilingüe español-inglés. La obra está estructurada siguiendo la clasificación de Strunz y cuenta con un completo índice onomástico.

Biography

Miguel Calvo Rebollar was born in 1955 in Soria, and is a doctor in Chemical Sciences and a professor at the University of Zaragoza. In addition to food biochemistry, his official teaching and research activity, he also studies Spanish topographic mineralogy and the history of mining in Spain. He has published, among other works, Minerales y Minas de España, in nine volumes, and Minerales de Aragón.

Christian Rewitzer was born in 1955 in Furth im Wald, Bavaria (Germany). A pharmacist by profession and amateur mineralogist, he is considered one of the best micro-mineral photographers in the world. As a researcher, often in collaboration with the University of Munich, he has studied many rare minerals and discovered two new species in Spain, alcantarillaite and fehrite.
