About this book

Language: Japanese with scientific nomenclature

Palaeontology studies organisms that lived in the past and are preserved as fossils. Examples include trilobites, ammonites, and dinosaurs. Life began about four billion years ago and has evolved from prokaryotes to eukaryotes and then to multicellular organisms. Around 570 million years ago, organisms became large enough to be found as fossils.

In this book, the history of Earth is divided into four major eras and a wide variety of paleontological organisms that inhabited each era are introduced. In the Precambrian Era, there was the Ediacaran Biome, soft-bodied organisms without eyes or teeth. They did not prey on each other, and it seems to have been a sort of “paradise.” Then, in the Paleozoic, life suddenly diversified in less than 10 million years. Through this event, known as the Cambrian Explosion, living things acquired advanced eyes, sharp mouths, and exoskeletons. Anomalocaris, a strange-looking Cambrian monster, and trilobites, also known as the “King of Fossils,” are paleontological creatures representative of the Paleozoic Era.

Dinosaurs survived the mass extinction at the end of the Paleozoic Era and prospered in the Mesozoic Era. Dinosaurs, with their huge bodies and powerful jaws, ruled the earth. But about 66 million years ago, the age of the dinosaurs came to an end when an asteroid hit the earth. Then, the Cenozoic Era, which continues to the present day, began, and various mammals prospered.

This book uses a wealth of illustrations and photographs to visually introduce fascinating prehistoric creatures. The appearance and ecology at that time are explained in an easy-to-understand manner, including research results.
