Sri Lanka is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. In terms of species diversity per unit area it ranks high for many group of animals. The birds are a good example with no less than 33 species of birds considered endemic to it. Another 55 species are restricted to mainland India and the Island. Sri Lanka has around 450 species of birds recorded when residents, migrants,vagrants and pelagics are taken in to account.
