About this book

Language: French

Minimum system requirements are Windows 2000 or XP and Plugin SVG Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader. (installers for these are present on the disc).

Although only less than 10% of the ocean surface has been mapped by acoustic surveys from ships, geophysical methods can now calculate a global map of the topography of the seabed using altimetric measurements from satellites.

Developed by two institutes, LEGOS and Géosciences Azur, the map presented here provides a detailed and interactive version of the Carte des Fonds Océaniques par Altimétrie Spatiale published in parallel in large paper format (110 × 80 cm).

The map consists of a grid of 5760 × 2305 pixel units measuring 7 km on each side (at 1/16th of a degree), expressing an average depth accuracy of a few tens to a few hundreds of meters. A 32-page booklet elaborates on how this map was developed form the altimetric satellite data..

The spatial analysis tools available on this CD allow one to visualize the digital terrain models (DTM) of the seafloor at different scales. It is also possible to identify and name the major geological structures of the ocean floor. Taken together, the interactive map offers students, teachers and researchers an innovative tool to access the underwater topography of the planet.
