About this book

Language: French

Each year, the author strives to publish an updated current overview of the nomenclature of valid taxa of the genus Carabus, taking into account the most recent work. As the title suggests, this list is dedicated to the memory of Carl-Ludwig Blumenthal (1917-1989), who had the idea and published the first edition in 1981 under the title Liste der Gattung Carabus nach Breunings Monographie..

However, since the last published classification of the genus Carabus (Deuve, 2004, World Catalogue of the Genus Carabus), which was used to structure the previous lists of Blumenthal, two major studies of molecular analysis of nucleic acids have provided new decisive date that significantly improve our understanding of the phylogeny of the genus Carabus and thus initiated a renewed classification.

This is the work of Sota & Ichikawa (2004) and that of Deuve, Cruaud, Genson & Rasplus (2012, in press). But it has also taken into account, of course, the oldest work in molecular phylogeny Su, Kim, Okamoto and Osawa, not to mention some significant results of Imura on morphology.

Thus, before the Blumenthal list itself, the reader can find the synopsis of this new classification and definitions of old and new groups that were appointed on the principle of "collective nouns" (cf. Deuve, 2004) .

Of particular note is that some names initially created with an ending in "-igenici" have been modified with an ending in "i", this simple plural allows simplification of names (which is useful for example for "Cavazzutiocarabigenici"), but above all to erase the Greek meaning ("behind") that could explain the "Carabogéniens" in the spirit of Lapouge in 1930, but had no place for other taxa (eg "Cathopliigenici" are not "origin" of Cathoplius).
