About this book

The sixth title in the bestselling Collins Guide series, this book covers the fungi of the British Isles, with considerable relevance for Europe and the wider temperate world.

Leading mycological artists have been specially commissioned to ensure accurate, detailed illustrations. Where possible, species are described and illustrated on the same page, with up-to-date authoritative text aiding identification. Nearly 2400 species are illustrated in full colour, with detailed notes on how to correctly identify them, including details of similar, confusing species. Illustrations of young and mature fruiting bodies are included where necessary, and key features are highlighted for quick and easy reference.

Written by one of Europe's leading mycologists and horticultural scientists, Stefan Buczacki, and illustrated by two of the world's leading natural history illustrators, Chris Shields and Denys Ovenden, this is the ultimate field guide for mushroom and toadstool lovers.

  • Disappointingly, not a field guide for amateurs.
By olwen 4 Sep 2019 Written for Paperback
This book includes very many species and in so doing, sacrifices most of the features that make for a good field guide. The "Keys" rely on spore print colour, not usually possible in the field. Then, given e.g. a white spore print, there is no further key apart from a series of 87 (literally) thumbnail size pictures of different genus shapes. If you don't pick the right one, you are completely lost, as there is nothing else. This applies to other spore print colours of pink, various shades of brown, dark brown and black, while the Cortinarius group are removed without further explanation.
My next problem was the very small print throughout the text, with minuscule print in the index.
Thirdly, there is no obvious indication of toxicity. In the text of Fly Agaric it says "Poisonous.....Taste: do not attempt." However, this does not stand out from the text at all, again suggesting this is aimed at experts and not amateurs.

I feel this should have been aimed at more competent mycologists, who need to identify specimens to species level. For me, it will be a last check, when I think I have arrived at the correct answer.
