About this book

Language: Dutch

The story of a forgotten Dutch polar expedition. For 130 years, the library of the KNMI (the Dutch equivalent of the Met Office) hid a large treasure. A forgotten box containing material about a historical expedition to the Extreme North. An exciting story that is at least as dramatic as the expedition of Willem Barentz to Nova Zembla Island. But why were the Dutch there, what were they looking for?

The year is 1882 and in the framework of the First International Polar Year a group of KNMI meteorologists wants to go to Western Siberia. Instigator of the Dutch expedition is Buys Ballot, the founder of the KNMI. On the journey there their ship gets grounded in the pack ice of the Kara Sea and sinks somewhere between Nova Zembla Island and the Yamal Peninsula. The crew has to overwinter and build their pre-fab house on what appears to be a sturdy ice floe. After the winter and a cool summer rescue still seems unlikely – no ship can reach their position. The men decide to walk to the mainland! They pick their way over floating and dangerously wobbling ice floes, roaming the ice for some three weeks.

This book about the Dutch Polar Expedition during the First International Polar Year of 1882-1883 sketches the story of a group of men who were only able to survive by cooperating. Why they battled for their lives, the KNMI meteorologists still gave it their all to follow the internationally agreed programme of observations.

A gorgeous book for anyone with an interest in voyages of discovery, (maritime) history, science, and meteorology.
