About this book

Language: Dutch with 1-page English summary

This publication presents a new key to the adult Trichoptera species of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The illustrated, dichotomous key covers 21 groups of Trichoptera, defined by the placement of tibial spurs and the presence (or absence) of ocelli. Every character is illustrated, mainly by new, original photos, and mostly original line drawings. Plates showing male and female genitalia are included for each group, almost exclusively using new, original photos with the exception of the family Hydroptilidae, which are illustrated using existing line drawings.

Currently, the species list of the Benelux contains 232 species, Belgium 215 (Wallonia 201, Flanders 138, excluding Brussels District: 135), Grand Duche Luxembourg 189, and the Netherlands 182. This book covers 243 species, including 11 species from adjacent regions that may be expected to occur in the Benelux. Species accounts on every species include notes on their identification, distribution, ecology, and phenology. Many species are illustrated by a photograph of an adult individual in the field. The authors hope this book will contribute to the study of these interesting insects and that this will ultimately serve the purpose of conservation of their aquatic habitats.
