About this book

From the introduction:

"It is now 23 years since publication of fascicle 28 of the Neotropical Diptera Catalog dealing with Tabanidae. In that period 207 new generic, specific or subspecific names have been published, as well as many new synonyms or other status changes. There were also omissions and errors which have turned up with continued use of the catalog by us and colleagues.

We at first contemplated merely supplying corrections and additions to the catalog, but these proved so numerous that it seemed better to produce an essentially new catalog. The list of references in the 1971 catalog included only those publications containing information of taxonomic or nomenclatorial interest. This new list contains all publications concerning Neotropical Tabanidae of which we are aware as of 1 July 1994.

A total of 1172 valid species and subspecies are listed in the following catalog in 65 genera, representing 27.3% of the 4290 valid species known worldwide, and 47.4% of the 137 genera."
