Elles occupent des milieux très variés : pelouses calcaires, prairies, lisières forestières, forêts claires, dépressions d'arrières-dunes, zones marécageuses.

Dans des chapitres de généralités, les auteurs présentent la biologie des orchidées avec un focus sur les mécanismes très originaux de pollinisation qui intriguent beaucoup les botanistes.
