In 2013, wildlife film producer Paul Wetton set out to look at some of the heathland wildlife to be found in Britain including the six native reptile species. Paul was gratefully shown a colony of Sand Lizards with the males in their breeding colours and a large Smooth Snake was discovered at Arne RSPB reserve. Here Britain's largest arachnid, the Raft Spider, was filmed on a small acidic bog pool. The Farne Islands feature on this twin-DVD set after Paul made two visits to the islands to film the breeding sea birds. A third trip was made later in the year to capture footage of the rare vagrant Bridled Tern that roosted on Inner Farne for several weeks.
Time was spent filming insects that included several Bumblebee species, Great Green Bush Crickets and the Long-tailed Blue butterflies that bred along the south coast in 2013. A local wintering Bittern was filmed in icy conditions early in the year whilst migratory Stone Curlews were captured in the autumn at a heathland roost site in Suffolk. Rarer birds were sought including a male Harlequin Duck in the Outer Hebrides, a Dusky Thrush in Margate and a Brunnich's Guillemot in Portland Harbour.
