The book gives a brief outline of the 200-year history of amphibian research on Java and tabulates the names used by Van Kampen (1923) - 38 species, Iskandar (1998) - 40 species, Kusrini (2013) - 30 species and the present book (2021) - 45 species, including one currently being described for the first time. The species chapters that follow are arranged according to families. Java is the most populous and densely populated island in the world, yet it has an impressive amphibian fauna. The book is intended to sensitize the local population to the beauty and need for protection of the amphibian fauna.
