Birds of Chhattisgarh Report by Bird Count India 2017-2018

Chhattisgarh is one of the most heavily forested States in India and harbours rich biodiversity and a large number of avian species. Thanks to the favourable ecological and climatic conditions, over 450 bird species have been recorded in the State (out of over 1300 species found in India), including over 100 migratory species. To more deeply involve birdwatchers, a dedicated project to document the birds of the State was launched in August 2017. The project was carried out by Bird Count India in partnership with the Chhattisgarh Forest Department during which all 27 districts of the State were surveyed by project researcher Ravi Naidu, generating a total of 18,793 observations of 365 species. Historical records contributed an additional 22,487 observations. Furthermore, experienced birdwatchers were encouraged to upload their observations to the online platform eBird, generating an additional 52,100 observations of 298. In total, out of 454 species on record for the state, 365 species were recorded during the survey out of which 111 are migratory and 250 are resident.
